Paul Higgins grew up around Coca-Cola for the entirety of his life. His father worked for a Coke company. He grew up doing various things for his dad’s company. When he went to college, he even worked various jobs for Coke to help pay his bills. After he graduated (with two degrees), he swore he’d never work for Coca-Cola.
But even after those two degrees, the job outlook was scarce.
He bit the bullet and picked up a sales job at Coca-Cola, the place he swore he’d never go back to. Several years later, Paul worked his way quite high up the corporate ladder.
He swore he’d quit, eventually.
That opportunity came later than he’d expected, however, and his job, whilst high-paying, was eating away at quality time he needed to spend with his family.
Finally, Paul left his company and went on to found his current, successful business – Build Live Give.
It wasn’t that simple, however.
What Did Paul Do?
It took six years for Paul to really crack the code with his business.
He started looking into coaching, and achieved several accreditations that furthered his professional role as a counselor.
During those six years, Paul had quite a few rough patches.
There were things he did right, and things he surely wouldn’t do again, given a similar opportunity.
We’re here to talk about what Paul did right because ultimately, that’s all that matters.
Paul is now happier than ever, successful, and has a business centered around his passion: helping people.
Oh yeah – he also gets to spend a ton of actual time with his kids, something he was never able to do in his high-demand corporate job at Coca Cola.

Building A Business Around Your Passion
Here are a few important things that Paul did, things that every aspiring entrepreneur and job-quitter needs to do.
- Identify Your Passion: And not only identify it, identify it in a manner that has the ability to
make you and your family money.
Paul, for example, has a passion for helping people.
He found a group of like-minded individuals, and built a company that helps individuals build great careers, great lives, and give back to the community.
This was, of course, after several failed attempts.
Paul kept it simple, and stuck with his passion for helping others as a foundation for growing into a profitable business.
That’s exactly what you need to do.
- Don’t Be Afraid to Ask For Help: Help is one of the most valuable things you can ask for,
as an aspiring business owner.
Look for like-minded individuals, coaches, and mentors in the area you’re trying to make a buck in.
Think people will be stingy?
You will be surprised with how many people are happy to lend a hand!
On the topic of help and like-minded individuals, another important thing to consider is a mastermind group.
A mastermind group is a group of highly-motivated individuals, all interested in a similar cause, and all interested in helping each other succeed and flourish in similar areas.
Mastermind groups are important for a number of reasons.
Inevitably, you’ll expand your network and further your connections which, as an entrepreneur looking to start your own company, are incredibly important things.
Collaboration is another benefit of a mastermind group; get feedback and criticism on your ideas, and hear potential thoughts on what you could be doing better.
It’s like an accelerated drafting process.
Finally, a mastermind group will help you push your mental limits and help you learn more, as an individual.
You might think, upon starting a company, that you’ve covered all the bases.
Odds are that you haven’t, however, and being in a mastermind group is a surefire way to ensure that you’re doing everything correctly, and learning what you could be doing better or more successfully.
Long story short: Don’t be afraid to seek help from others.
Odds are that you’re not the only one in the world going through the struggle of finding your way in the world of entrepreneurship, for the first time.
- Don’t Just Plan Your Goals Around Your Business: Don’t think strictly about what you
want to do with a company.
Think about what you want to do with your personal time.
Think about your values.
Think about who or what you’re missing spending time with.
After all, if you left your job to start a business only to think about your business, what would be the point of leaving your job in the first place?
- Always Think About Scaling: When/if you’re on your own for the first time, and
experience your first lick of success, it can be easy to stick with what works. Instead, take a known process and delegate it, so you can focus on non-replicable processes, or unknown ones.
On the same token, think big and wide; don’t confine your business to local doings!
Consider moving it to a virtual platform if you aren’t able to experience success immediately in your surroundings.
These three tips might have you in quite a solid spot, if you’re considering leaving your job and starting a business based on something you’re passionate about.
The Final Bits and Pieces
The idea of an illustrious (but overworked) corporate executive leaving their position unexpectedly, in order to pursue their passion, is something that may seem impossible.
It’s not impossible, however, as Paul Higgins illustrates with his successful startup – Build Live Give.
Paul enlightened us with several important things to keep in mind if you’re willing to follow in his footsteps.
Largely, they can be summarized in the following three points:
- Identify your passion and identify a way to monetize it.
- Don’t be afraid to seek the help, advice, and assistance of others who are in a situation similar to yours.
- Don’t be afraid to grow your business, and always have your mind on scaling it.
Once again, it might not be easy.
After all, it took Paul six years to get his business off the ground.
It can be a straightforward process, and that’s the overarching point.
Follow Paul’s advice and throw away the hopeless and desolate career.
