Today’s topic is:
Two essential habits to growing your business
You will learn:

  1. What they are – not what you expect
  2. How to develop them

When you read the title, what first came to mind?
Like bums, there are so many definitions of what a habit is.
The Cambridge Dictionary definition is:
something that you do often and regularly, sometimes without knowing that you are doing it.
James Clear the author of Atomic Habits defined it as:
Habits are the small decisions you make and actions you perform every day. According to researchers at Duke University, habits account for about 40 percent of our behaviours on any given day.
If you haven’t read James’s book, I highly recommend it. I listened to the audiobook on Amazon. Free when you first sign up, from memory.
They are essential to what we achieve in our professional and personal lives. For many of you the lines are very blurred.
What were you thinking I was going to say?
Be brave and let me know on Linkedin – was it sales or marketing? If you aren’t connected go to and connect.

The two are:

  1. Personal development
  2. Research

Now, these are broad and will mean different things to me than you.
Let me explain why I consider then essential and how you can create them in your life.

Personal Development
I read 7 Habits of highly effective people by Stephen R Covey in 1993 for the first time. I have read it every year since.
This sent me on a personal development journey which still runs today.
So far this year I have spent 8.13 % of my time on personal development. This equates to 119 hours and 19 minutes at the time of recording.
I trach every 30min block of time spent in Toggl.
When I was a Coca-Cola, a global CEO coach spoke to us and said we should spend 20% of our time working on the business and not in the business. It wasn’t as well know back then and this is partly why I can’t remember their name But the principle stuck with me.
What I classify as personal development includes:

  • Morning routine
  • Naps
  • Masterminds I am in
  • Mentoring calls for me
  • Advisory boards, I am in

Before we go into the second habit Research
I would like to talk to you about Dubb – D U B B. It is an All-in-one sales & marketing video platform that helps to attract, convert and retain more happy clients.
Stand out in someone’s inbox – be it email, slack or social media – by sending them videos
I used it this week to followup on outstanding proposals. I had the proposal on-screen and me talking it through.
Why not check it out for yourself.  Go to
The second habit is
My mum was a school teacher and she ingrained in me the art of research from an early age.
Who is your life taught you something which has lasted?
So far this year I have spent 8.11 % of my time on research. This equates to 119 hours at the time of recording.
I am 3.76% short of the 20% – some work to do.
I keep all my research in Airtable so I can retrieve it at the drop of a hat. When I was a 6% kidney function in 2018, I had kidney brain fog and struggled to recall info. My process saved me and even though I have cleared the fog post-transplant – let’s face it I am not getting any younger. Big 50 this year.
How sharp is your memory recall these days?
What I classify as research includes:

  • Listening to podcasts (I am at 2.5-3X now)
  • Interviewing experts
  • Reading social media (limited)
  • Watching masterclasses and webinars
  • Reading blogs
  • Watching youtube

Three key actions from today I would like you to take

  1. Consider how much time you are spending on development and research
  2. Create some habits in these two areas
