Today’s topic is

Should I hire a VA direct or through an agency?

You will learn

Pros and Cons of both

If you are a regular listener of the podcast who would have heard me reference my passion for having a Virtual Assistants – or in my case several.

If you are new, please go back and listen to these episodes:

  • 225 Doubling sales effort by using a sales assistant
  • 222 Outsourcing to the Philippines with John Jonas
  • 219 What should your team look like?
  • 205 How to improve sales conversion by removing you
  • 145 How to be personally effective

My passion started in corporate where I had executive assistants and in 2012 I set up my own Virtual Assistant business to support myself and clients.

I exited the business in 2016 due to my health.

I saw the true value of them when I went through my transplant.

If you don’t have one, please start today.

I dedicated a full chapter to my book Build Live Give to Virtual Assistants. Go to to get your copy. All proceeds go to the purple house.

I will run through the pros and cons of going direct or through an agency.

Direct is where there is no middle person. You hire, train and develop them yourself.

Agency is where they hire, train and develop the VA and you lead their work.

  • Lower rate per hour. Range from 3-5 USD per hour
  • Work from home
  • Flexible hours
  • No set hours eg: PT or FT
  • Loyal

  • Can have multiple clients which are tricky to juggle
  • Hard to find
  • Hard to replace

Before we go into an agency

I would like to talk to you about Dubb – D U B B. It is an All-in-one sales & marketing video platform which helps to attract, convert and retain more happy clients.

I used it this week to create value add content to use in my Linkedin sales process.

Why not check it out for yourself. Go to

  • They recruit and screen talent
  • They train talent
  • They have replacements
  • They offer PT and FT

  • Higher rate per hour 8-15 USD per hour
  • Buy out fee
  • Lose PT to another person
  • Min PT hours
  • Less support over time but maintain their margin

The pros and cons need to be put into context given your circumstances.

Should you have a VA – absolutely.

Which approach – it depends.

The advice I give my clients

First time – use an agency.

Once you have all the processes in place then you can add people directly to your team.

Three key actions from today

  1. Make a list of pros and cons matched to your personal situation
  2. Tap into my 9 years of experience to see what would work best for you
  3. Hire and never regret
