5 Tactics to Develop a Cohesive Team

To break through the million-dollar sales barrier, it’s vital that you have a great sales team connecting with your customers. No matter if you have used the best way to hire salespeople into your virtual sales team, the team will only be as good as you create it.

How to build a world-class sales team

A great sales team is competitive but collaborative. They focus on growth, but not at the expense of customer focus. They use a sales system to connect, convert, and collaborate. How can you make sure all this happens when you’re building a sales team?

Here are five tactics to employ from today.

  1. Set a common goal for the team – increase sales

The first thing that you need to do when it comes to building a sales team for your B2B company is to set a common goal. This is where a lot of businesses go wrong. They do not establish clear, common goals from the offset. Without this collective goal, you’ll find that your salespeople will lack focus. It’s demotivating, too.

By having a goal to work toward, you ensure your team has the enthusiasm that is needed to succeed. The goal, of course, is to increase sales. You’ll have to be more specific, though. Put some numbers and dates on targets, for example.

  1. Encourage collaboration among team members

Collaboration is at the core of all successful businesses today. There are several ways that you can encourage collaboration amongst members of your team.

One of the things that you can do is ensure that you have the best technology in place to facilitate effective communication. From video conferencing to instant messaging, there are a lot of different approaches that can help with collaboration.

There are also lots of great tools out there that can help your team members when it comes to efficient file sharing, customer communication, and improving team productivity.

Want to know the tools you should be using? In an episode of my Build Live Give podcast, I discuss the seven tools I recommend (and use) for a service-based business.

  1. Point toward a growth mindset

This is something that all businesses can benefit from.

If every member of your team evolves from a fixed to a growth mindset, your sales will soar. Why? Because when everyone is committed to the cause and focused on moving forward, it makes a huge difference.

The last thing you want is for your sales team to remain in a state of contentment with what they are doing month to month. Instead, you want things to get better and better. It is important that you are all in this together. You should lead by example, showing your people how drive, enthusiasm, and commitment deliver continuous improvement.

  1. Promote transparency

Another tip when it comes to building a team for a B2B company is to promote transparency. Be upfront and honest about your business. Bring people into strategic conversations. Transparency stops any rumor mills from turning. It creates trust and teamwork.

Whether the news is good or bad, it is important to be transparent with all members of your team. Always do so with optimism, compassion, and empathy – and make sure that you explain decisions and listen to feedback.

  1. Follow a customer-facing approach

The final piece of advice that I have for you when it comes to building a successful B2B sales team is to follow a customer-facing approach.

At the end of the day, no business is a success without its customers. To enjoy deeper, more meaningful, and longer-lasting relationships with your customers, stress the importance of effective listening in sales. Make sure that your salespeople are delivering to the needs of your customers, and not simply selling the service you are offering. In short, put your target customer at the heart of everything you do.

How to build a sales team – Summing up

Just like a sports team, you can hire world-beaters and finish at the bottom of the league. What’s important is to get your salespeople working as a team and for your customers. Sales are highly competitive, and it’s only right that your salespeople will be competitive. But your team will not survive as a group of disparate individuals.

When you build a great B2B sales team, you’ll find every member collaborates with their colleagues. They’ll share what works and what doesn’t, and they will do so to achieve a common goal. And it is this that will help your sales take off.
